Ingredients

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • 2 cups whipped cream
  • 1 cup cherry filling or fresh cherries
  • Chocolate shavings
  • Maraschino cherries

Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease two 9-inch round cake pans.
  • In a large bowl, mix flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  • Add eggs, buttermilk, oil, and vanilla to the dry ingredients and mix until smooth.
  • Carefully stir in the boiling water.
  • Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans.
  • Bake for 30 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  • Let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes before transferring to wire racks.
  • Once cooled, slice each cake in half horizontally to create four layers.
  • Place one layer on a serving plate, spread with whipped cream, and add cherry filling.
  • Repeat for the next layers, finishing with whipped cream on top and decorating with chocolate shavings and cherries.
