Ingredients

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 ½ cups warm water
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 packet 2 ¼ teaspoons instant yeast
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil optional

Instructions

  • In a large bowl, mix warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until frothy.
  • Add flour and salt to the yeast mixture. Stir until a dough forms.
  • Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 10 minutes until smooth.
  • Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it, and let it rise for 1 hour in a warm place.
  • Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • Punch down the dough and shape it into a loaf.
  • Place the loaf into a greased pan or on a baking sheet.
  • Let it rise again for about 30 minutes.
  • Score the top of the loaf with a sharp knife.
  • Bake for 30-35 minutes or until golden brown and hollow-sounding when tapped.
