Dissolve sugar in warm water and sprinkle yeast over it. Let sit for 5 minutes until frothy.
Add olive oil, salt, garlic powder, and dried herbs to the yeast mixture.
Gradually add flour, mixing until a dough forms.
Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5-7 minutes until smooth.
Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise for 1 hour in a warm place.
Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C).
Punch down the dough and roll it out into a rectangle about ½ inch thick.
Cut the dough into strips about 1 inch wide and twist each strip.
Place twisted strips on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
Brush the tops with olive oil and sprinkle with Parmesan cheese, if desired.
Bake for 15-20 minutes or until golden brown.
