Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
In a bowl, combine flour, ginger, cinnamon, cloves, baking soda, and salt.
In another bowl, cream together softened butter and brown sugar until fluffy.
Add the egg, molasses, and vanilla extract to the butter mixture and mix well.
Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until combined.
Chill the dough in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour.
Roll out the dough on a floured surface to about ¼ inch thick.
Cut out shapes using cookie cutters and place them on a baking sheet.
Bake for 10-12 minutes or until the edges are firm.
Allow cookies to cool before decorating with icing.
