Ingredients

  • 1 cup cornmeal
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 cup chopped green onions
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 large egg
  • Oil for frying

Instructions

  • In a large bowl, combine cornmeal, flour, baking powder, salt, and pepper.
  • Add chopped green onions to the dry ingredients and mix well.
  • In a separate bowl, whisk together buttermilk and egg until combined.
  • Pour the wet ingredients into the dry mixture and stir until just combined.
  • Heat oil in a deep skillet or fryer to 350°F (175°C).
  • Using a spoon, drop batter into hot oil, frying in batches.
  • Fry for 3-4 minutes or until golden brown, turning occasionally.
  • Remove hush puppies with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.
  • Season with additional salt if desired.
  • Serve warm with your favorite dipping sauce.
