Measure 1 cup of rolled oats and set aside.
In a saucepan, bring 2 cups of water (or milk) to a boil.
Add 1/4 teaspoon of salt to the boiling liquid.
Stir in the rolled oats.
Reduce the heat to low and let it simmer.
Cook for about 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.
Check the consistency; cook longer for thicker oatmeal.
Remove from heat and let it sit for a minute.
Add sweetener to taste.
Serve hot, topped with your favorite ingredients.
